Some Enzyme in Group A streptococci and Citrobacter spp can hydrolysis the L-pyroglutamic acid 7-amino-4-methyl-coumarin (7AMC) and dimethylamino-cinnamaldehyde, they react together to give a purple color.

The new PYR Test, called "one Step PYR test" does not require a color developer reagent. In this new One-Step PYR test, just apply the organism to the test area of a dry reagent strip (XeroStrip)and a grayish blue color in seconds indicates a positive test. The test is quicker and safer and not messy like the conventional PYR test. The new PYR Test is available from Biorex Labs in the United States.
